How to Care for Linen – A Practical Guide
Linen is one of the most refined and durable natural fabrics, and proper care helps preserve its beauty for many years. Below you’ll find essential rules that will keep your linen soft, structured, and elegantly textured.
Washing linen at the right temperature
Linen is best washed at 30–40°C, which protects the fibers from shrinking and weakening. Higher temperatures work only for thick, white tablecloths. For linen bedding and clothing, cooler water is always the safest choice.
Gentle detergents – the key to longevity
Choose mild detergents when washing linen. Avoid bleach and harsh cleaning agents that can damage the natural fiber structure. Linen responds best to gentle soaps and simple‑formula liquids.
Don’t overload the washing machine
Linen needs space to move freely in water. An overfilled drum causes excessive creasing and makes it harder to rinse out detergent. Fewer items in the wash = better results.
Drying linen – preferably naturally
Air‑drying is ideal — laid flat or hung, preferably in the shade. Direct sunlight can stiffen the fibers. If you use a tumble dryer, choose a delicate cycle and remove the fabric while it’s still slightly damp.
Ironing linen with steam
Linen is easiest to iron when slightly damp, using high heat and steam. If you prefer a natural, softly wrinkled look, modern stonewashed linen doesn’t require ironing and looks beautiful without extra treatment.
Storing linen textiles
Store linen in a dry, well‑ventilated place. Avoid plastic covers — natural fibers need to breathe. Cotton or linen bags are perfect for long‑term storage.
